Abstract

Auto-Brewery Syndrome (ABS) presents a unique challenge for forensic toxicologists. While modern analytical methods can accurately identify and quantify ethanol, they are not always capable of determining where that ethanol originated. As scientific evidence supporting endogenous ethanol production continues to grow, questions surrounding interpretation become increasingly important. This article examines the forensic challenges associated with endogenous ethanol production, reviews factors that may influence interpretation, and explores the role and limitations of laboratory testing when the source of the ethanol is uncertain.
